Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater is located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area north of Tanzania. This area is a UNESCO World Haritage Site due to its special cultural and physical significance. According to everyone's best friend at homework - Wikipedia:
"The Ngorongoro crater is a large, unbroken, unflooded volcanic caldera. The crater, which formed when a giant volcano exploded and collapsed on itself some two to three million years ago, is 610 m (2,000 ft) deep and its floor covers 260 km2 (100 sq mi)."
Throughout the year, many tourists visit this place for the wildlife or to experience culture in the Masaai villages and more. Inside the crater, there is a unique ecosystem consisting of lakes, grasslands, bushes, savannas....yea. An enclosed wildlife safari made naturally.
Outside the crater, there is also the Olduvai Gorge, one of the most important prehistoric archaeological sites of the world, where the famous Dr. Louis and Mary Leakey did their excavations on homo habilis fossils. Remains of early hominid activities as early as 2-3 million years ago have been found here. It is also referred as the "Cradle of Mankind" because many earliest hominids evolved from the area. Hence, naturally East Africa is home to some of the oldest, richest cultures and complex history of the world. Sadly, not much of African history are taught in schools. It won't be that way when, I, teach world history.
